Abstract
192,686. Soper, J. F. Feb. 1, 1922, [Convention date]. Spring shackles. - Relates to spring devices interposed between the leaf springs and body of a motor-car and comprising pivotally connected inner and outer sets of levers connected at one end by an auxiliary spring and connected respectively to the end of the leaf spring and to the body of the car. The arrangement is such that the inner levers may swing up between the outer levers, the levers remaining freely pivoted if the auxiliary spring breaks, the connection between the sets of levers and between one set and the leaf spring being substantially in the same plane as the end of the leaf spring. When applied to the rear end of the chassis, the angled levers 2, Figs. 1 and 2, are carried by a bolt 6 passing through the chassis and are offset at 2 to receive between their lower ends a pair of levers 7 which are connected by a sleeve 10 mounted on the bolt 9. The eye 8 of the leaf spring 8 is connected to a pin 14 carried by the levers 7. Bolts 4 at the free ends of the levers carry members 3 which are screwed into the end coils of a helical spring 5, and slots or holes 4 are provided in the ends of the levers for adjusting the leverage. When applied at the front end of the chassis the levers 2, Fig. 5, are pivoted to a lug 1 on the chassis and the levers 7 are replaced by bell-crank levers 7, the arms of which are connected to the suspension spring 8 and to one end of the helical spring 5.
