Propelling, steering, and manoeuvring by water jets and aerial propellers.-In screw propeller apparatus for ships whereon an augmenter tube with controllable pallets is placed behind the propeller, such tubes are formed with a pressure chamber at the rear end. The tube which is of circular section at the propeller end, and gradually merges into a rectangular section aft, has its sides a, a<1>, Fig. 4<a>, bent into arcs with a common centre within which is rotatably mounted a section b of a cylinder cut away at c, c<1> to form a nozzle. For submarines the movable part and its fixed guides may be of spherical form instead of cylindrical. For providing a nozzle of variable area and reversal the controlled member may be in two b<1>, b<2>, Fig. 5a moving over external guides. In the position shown, forwardly directed nozzles d<1>, d<2> are formed for directing the propeller-stream ahead and reversing the ship. In the arrangement Fig. 6<c> the segments are piloted at points which are eccentric to the centre of curvature whereby there is a nozzle b<0> between the parts directed to the same side as the main nozzle d<2>. For moving the pellets jointly or positively, arms f<1>, f<2>, Fig. 8, on the pintles are connected with arms k<1>, k<2>, pivoted at k<0>, by rods h<1>, h<2>, springs providing a yielding connection. The arms k<1>, k<7> are linked by rods to a crosshead j on a tiller k. The crosshead can be moved to and fro on the tiller by screw-and-nut gear operated by the handwheel j<0>. Swinging the tiller produces the like motion of the pallets and rotating the handwheel produces opposite motion. Specifications 124,047, 141,445 and 159,927 are referred to.
