Abstract
191,803. Russell, R. Oct. 14, 1921. Treads and wearing-surfaces.-A compound material applicable for the manufacture of stair treads, mats, and the like, consists of a soft backing of felted or compressed fibres and a face of plastic rubber adhered thereto by pressure and vulcanization and formed with a design or pattern giving greater thickness to one part than to another. Rubber or rubber compound unvulcanized is laid on a metal mould or embossing plate, and a fabric of felted animal fibre impregnated with glue, or cotton or vegetable fibre impregnated with rubber, is laid thereon and subjected to hydraulic or other pressure and steam-heated so as to vulcanize the rubber. In a modification, in which compressed vegetable fibre is used, the trimmings from making pneumatic tyres are employed. The rubber-impregnated canvas waste is shredded in a machine and mixed with sulphur and, if desired, with filling- material, after which it is run from the machine into sheet form ready for a rubber facing. The Provisional Specification states also that the felt backing may be combined with a rubber facing having a suitable pattern of various colours, in the form of inlay. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 3116/85, [Class 140, Waterproof &c. fabrics], 18851/91, 1211/97, and 3809/03, [both in Class 42, Fabrics, Dressing &c.], 18007/08 and 9922/09, [both in Class 140, Waterproof &c. fabrics], and 7204/10, [Class 17 (ii), Boots and shoes, Construction of].
