Abstract

191,639. Weatherill, F. Feb. 16, 1922. Gas absorbers; arrangement; electrolytes. - A sealed primary battery of the type which is brought into action by inverting it is provided with a gas digester, so arranged that the latter is immersed in the electrolyte when the battery is not operating. The gas digester 2 consists of a perforated lead chamber packed with charcoal and the electrodes comprise the zinc rod 17 and the rectangular carbon plates 3, 4. The carbon plates protrude through the lead tray 7 and their upper edges are copper-plated for connection with the tray 7 and the outer lead casing 1. The zinc is supported by the lead cylinder 10 and is insulated therefrom by a rubber tube having a flange 19. Pressure is exerted on the head of the zinc rod by the thumb-screw 16 which passes through the middle of the bus-bar 15 held by uprights cemented into the acid-resisting material 11. A solution of potassium bichromate and nitrate, sodium chloride and mercuric sulphate in a mixture of hydrochloric and sulphuric acids is used as the electrolyte.
