Picric acid is obtained by nitrating with nitric acid or sodium nitrate in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid 2 : 4-dinitrophenol prepared from benzene by chlorination, dinitration, and treatment with caustic soda. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 9962/15.
