Abstract

15,956. Buckingham, J. F. Nov. 12. Projectiles.-Relates to incendiary projectiles or tracers, of the kind described in Specification 1198/15. According to this invention, the projectile comprises a case, closed at the back and filled with a substance such as phosphorus which inflames spontaneously as it leaves the case through one or more outlets in the side, each outlet being normally blocked up by an easily fusible filling such as solder, or by a plug held in place by such a substance. The arrangement is such that the closure cannot be dislodged until the projectile has left the gun-barrel. In the bullet shown in Fig. 3, the lateral outlet B is closed by a plug D, held in place by solder, which is melted on discharge by the heat of the gun-gases. The hole B may be placed near the front of the bullet, so that the solder does not melt until a short time after the projectile has left the gun C.
