Field carriages.-Relates to guns in which the firing height is made adjustable to adapt them for trench use, and consists in supporting the gun on a pillar having feet to rest upon the bottom of a trench, and providing it with a hood or box-shield to receive the head and shoulders of the operator. Fig. 1 shows a machine gun K mounted in a box-shaped shield G which is carried by a pillar, the parts A, C of which are telescopically mounted with respect to one another so that the firing height of the gun may be adjusted by rotating a handle e, thereby causing a pinion with two diametrically opposite teeth e<1> to engage with a rack D, which rests bv means of a roller d<1> on the upper part of the fixed pillar A. The rack is carried in a recess c in the movable pillar C so as to rotate therewith about the fixed pillar when the gun is trained by the operator, who occupies a seat F adjustably carried bv the pillar C and uses his feet against a wheel P adjustably fixed to the pillar A. An auxiliary shield M having a sighting-aperture m is carried bv the gun so as to close the aperture g in the main shield, and a U-shaped shield N surrounds the water jacket of the gun. An adjustable rod k clamped to a ring h is provided for elevating the gun. The whole mounting is transported with the gun in the vertical position bv holding one of the legs b<1> and a handle R which bridges the shield, the handle for this purpose being turned out against the stop r<1>.
