Abstract
13,012. Enock & Co., A. G., and Enock, A. G. Sept. 11. Packing, metallic; stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-Packing for the pistons, shafts, pistonrods, valve-rods, &c. of compressors, engines, pumps, fans, &c. comprises a hollow metallic chamber or space to which air, gas, paste, or liquid under pressure is admitted to expand the packing. The packing may be of lead, white metal, thin steel, brass, or other metal or alloy. The pressure may be obtained by means of a pump, by a screw-down plug or piston, or by connexion to a pressure main. The packing may be made porous and be expanded by lubrieating-material, which oozes through the pores In the form shown in Fig. 7, the packing A has a hollow interior a which is supplied with fluid under pressure by a pipe a<1>. The packing may be formed cylindrical for a shaft with parallel sides, or, as shown, may pack a conical surface on a shaft. In a modification, the packing is formed by an inner and an outer cylindrical sleeve soldered to end rings. Fig. 5 shows a flexible sleeve a<2> gripped between a sleeve a<3>, an end ring a<4>, and a flange a<5>. Pressure is applied to liquid or paste in the space a by a screw-down piston D. The packing may be in the form of a helical tube, to the interior of which fluid under pressure is supplied. In the form shown in Fig. 8, a shaft C carries a hollow packing A supplied with fluid by a passage a' in the shaft and secured between disks a<6>. Fig. 9 shows a flexible hollow packing A for a piston H, arranged in a groove in the cylinder and supplied with fluid under pressure by a passage a<1>.
