Abstract

12,964. Downs, C., and Littlejohn, W. B. Sept. 10. Lathes for boring shells have a cutter-bar G' secured by screws g in a saddle so arranged that the centre of the bar is approximately level with the top of the bed. The hollow spindle is driven from a main shaft d through double gearing. The belt-forks P are operated by a hand-lever P<1>. The saddle is traversed by a lead-screw driven through a clutch H'. The rack pinion is mounted directly on the handwheel shaft M, and the split nut is operated by a lever L<1> and cam-plate. The headstock is integral with the bed, and a tray R is provided to catch the cuttings and coolant.
