SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,524, dated March 25, 1884.

To all inkom, it 'may con/cern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLARD E. CLOUGH,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Concord, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, haveinventcd a certain new and useful Improvement in Boring-Machines;
and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
My improvements consist in `providing a number ofV bits, (say from two to twelve, more or less,) the stocks or bit-spindlesl for the same being mounted in bearings supported by arms projecting radially from a turret mounted and revolving upon a part of the frame of the improvedY borer, andin providing rolls upon the operating-table over which the timbers to be bored may be passed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the figures, Figure 1 represents a front elevation ofthe improvedborer as when in position ready for use. Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detailed plan view of the revolving turret carrying the bearings for six bit-spindles, showing a section of the frame upon which l it is permitted to turn.
A is the line of the oor upon which the frame B B of the boring-machine stands. The operating-table C slides up and down onsaid frame by means of ways D in the usual manner, the screw E and lhand-wheel E `governing its motion in either direction.
F is the revolving turret, from which extend radially and equidistant from each other p the arms f, upon theouter ends of which are suitable bearings, f', for the bit-spindles G.
g represents spring-catches, one of which is provided for each bearing f', for the purpose of holding the turret F whenready to bore a piece of timber, and a slot, b, is formed in the front of the frame B at the proper point to receive said catches g, as shown in the crosssectional view Fig. 3. f
-H H are springs placed y on the bit shafts or spindles G, which bearagainst and between friction or spur gearsl and a casting, J, placed upon the top of said shafts G. A vertical shaft, K, hung in suitable bearings bolted to 5o or cast upon the fra-me B', having-upon its lower end a friction or spur gear, L,"which, when required, will engage with the friction or spur gears I, and upon its upper end the tight and loose pulleys, respectively M M, transmits the required motion and power to the bit-shafts G.
A lever, N, is fulcrumed to a projection from the back of the frame B in such manner as that its forward end will be in position to bear upon any ofthe bit-spindles G when brought 6o' directly under the same, and by placing ones hand upon a handle, N', and' applying pressg ure downward the bit Y which happens to be in the bit-spindle thenin motion will be fed gradually into the work to be bored, and
by removing ones hand from the lever N the spring I-I, by expansion, returns said bit-spindle andbit to the position shown in the drawings.
rlhe object of providing so many bits upon 7o the one machine is to facilitate the work to be accomplished by the borer when differentsized bits are constantly required, and avoid the necessity for changing the same by simply turning the turret and bringing therequired size in front.
It is safe to say that with my improved borer th ree differentsized holes may be bored while a bit is being changed once in a machine constructed with but one bit-shaft. By pro- 8O viding rolls c in the operating-table O, its construction is rendered much more simple than would otherwise be possible, as by this means the accustomary rack and pinion used to adjust thetable laterally are not required. There- 8 5 fore the table G may be permanently bolted to the supporting-piece C', as is shown in the drawings, and but one motion is required--h viz., up and down. Stay-rods O may be placed in suitable bearings formed upon a casting, which is bolted to the front of the frame B, for use in holding the work down upon the table C, and astand, l?, bolted to the top of the Vtable C, will carry the screw Q, which, by means of the hand-wheel R, will lclampsaid g5 work between itself and the vertical back of the table C.
I am well aware that the idea of placing a number of bits in bearings arranged to revolve around a portion ofthe frame of aboringroo v ing-machines of all descriptions.
One advantage which I desire to state in a boring-machine constructed in the manner described is that While the shaft K may be continually in motion, all the bits may be quiet by placing the turret in such position as that neither of the catches g shall enter the slots b, and but one of the said bits can ever be set in motion at one time, for the reason that the gear L can transmit power to but one of the gears I at the same time.
Having thus full y described my invention, I claiml. In a boringmachine constructed substantially as described, having a cored iron frame, B B', and an adjustable operating-table, C, a revolving` turret, F, provided with arms f, containing bearings ffor the bit-spindles G, operated by suitable gearing, in the manner and for the-purpose specified.
2. In a boring-machine constructed substantially as described, having a cored iron frame formed of two or more parts, and an adjustable operating-table, C, the combination of two or more bit-spindles, G, and springs H, with the revolving turret F, operating as and for the purpose describedand set forth.
3. In a boring-machine constructed substantially as described, the combination, with a cored iron frame, B B, of a vertical shaft, K, carrying the pulleys M M, and a spur or friction gear, L, the spur or friction gear I, bit-spindles G, springs H, some suitable lever or levers, N, and the revolving turret F, all operating as described and set forth.
4. The combination, with the cored iron frame B B', having slot b, and a revolving turret, F, carrying the bit-spindles G, of suitable spring-catches, g, attached in some convenient manner to the arms f, and operating Within the said slot b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
