Abstract

11,836. Mustin, H. C. Aug. 16. Protecting object-glasses from rain, spray, and the like.-Water, smoke, &c. is prevented from coming into contact with the objective of a telescope, periscope, &c. by moving means such as a rotating wheel. As shown, a wheel comprising disks 21, 22 and radial or curved vanes 23 is rotated through gear-wheels 15, 16, 18 from a power-wheel 20, or a flexible shaft, motor, &c., and is contained in a casing secured to the telescope 1 in front of the objective 2. The casing has apertures 5, 9, 12 the centres of which are in the optical axis, and the wheel has apertures in each disk which pass between the apertures 9, 12 and are preferably equal in number to and between each pair of vanes and nearer to their receding edges than to their advancing edges. Water &c., striking the objective end of the telescope and entering the casing, is thrown out through holes 25 in the casing. The holes 25 may be closed by a rotatable cap 30, which has holes 31 and an aperture 34 registering with the aperture 12. The wheel is rotated sufficiently rapidly to prevent flickering of the image and does not affect the direction of the line of sight.
