Abstract
11,832. Hoskins, J. Aug. 16. Shafts and tunnels.-An emergency escapeway for miners comprises a shaft 5 lined with flanged sections 6 and communicating at its lower end with a conduit 8, which may have branches leading to all the working places, walls 9 dividing the shaft and conduits each into two passages 10, 11. Upper levels of the mine communicate with the shaft through doors 13. Ladders 16 are carried by bolts 15 in the passage 10 of the shaft. The passage 11 of the shaft is connected by a pipe 12 to a draught furnace, so that foul air is drawn from the mine through the passages 11, while fresh air is drawn into the mine through the passages 10, by which the miners may escape from the lower level.
