Abstract

11,228. Remington Typewriter Co., [Assignees of Barr, J. H.]. Jan. 21, [Convention date]. Ink - ribbon mechanism.-In adjustable - throw vibrator mechanism, the vibrator is in constant connexion with a number of independent actuators which are driven alternately and are arranged to impart different throws to the vibrator. The actuators may also be silenced for mimeographing. In the arrangement shown, the actuators consist of two levers 65, 66 pivoted on a rod 61 and connected by links 71, 72 to the arm 50 of a bell-crank 49, which carries the vibrator. The lever 65 is longer than the lever 66, and the connexion 75 between the link 71 and the arm 50 is nearer to the pivot 52 of the bell-crank than the connexion 79 between the link 72 and the arm. The levers are driven by a member 82 formed as part of a rocking frame 81, which is mounted on the rod 61 and is engaged by a lever 92 operated by the universal bar the driving-member 82 having a constant stroke. The driving-member is formed with apertures 86, 87 connected by a slot 90, and the frame 81 can be shifted laterally to bring the slot into engagement with either lever 65, 66, the lever 65 imparting a greater throw to the vibrator than the lever 66. The inoperative lever 65 or 66 moves idly in the aperture 86 or 87. For mimeographing, the frame is shifted to the left into a position in which both levers are in the gap 86. The forward movement of the frame 81 is limited by a single fixed stop which is effective to arrest the vibrator in the upper position when either lever 65 or 66 is operative. The stop may consist of a lug 115<a> on a plate 115, which is adjustably secured to the type-lever segment 26 by a screw 118 passing through a slot 117. A guide-lug 115<b> on the plate is arranged between the hanger-washers 119. The knot 103, Fig. 2, for shifting the frame 81 is secured to a rock-sbaft provided with a crank, which is connected by a link 94 to the frame. A pointer 108 on the rock-shaft reads over index marks or colours 107 on a plate 101, a pivoted stop 110 in the path of a pin 109 normally preventing the pointer from being set to the top or stencilmark. The stop can be lifted by a finger-piece 113. The rock-shaft is provided with a spring finger formed with holes adapted to engage a fixed lug and hold the rock-shaft in the set position. The pivot rod 61 is mounted in ears 60 in a bracket 58 secured to the segment 26, one ear being threaded to receive a threaded part of the pivot rod, which is secured by a nut. The levers 65, 66 are formed with spaced ears 68, 70 respectively, the ears 68 being arranged between the ears 60, 70. The pivot 52 of the bell-crank 49 is carried by the platen-shift rail 12 and is preferably mounted in the known bracket 53, which is formed with a tongue 55 carrying a screw 56 which engages a guide-slot 57 in the vibrator. During platen-shift, the links 71, 72 swing upwards above the stationary pivots 73, 77 which connect the links to the levers 65, 66, and at the end of the shift movement, the links are at the same angle above, as they are normally below, the horizontal, so that the operation of the vibrator is not affected by shifting the platen.
