Massage.-Massage appliances for the mouth and gums, of the type in which massaging - rollers are carried by a handle, are constructed so that the supporting pin or axle of the rollers and the adjacent parts of the handle are not liable to contact with the surface under treatment. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the end of a tapering and somewhat flexible handle 3 is bent into a loop 4 to grip an axle pin 5. The massaging-rollers project beyond the ends of the axle and above the loop 4. In a modified construction, the pin 5 is formed as a bolt and nut, so that the rollers are detachable from the axle. In some cases, the pin 5 only projects on one side of the loop, and the appliance is fitted with a single roller. The rollers may be formed of the same material throughout or may be fitted with metal bushes 6 as shown, and may be covered with material impregnated with medicaments or chemicals. The handle may be formed with joints to assist in applying the rollers to the surface under treatment. For combined massage and electric treatment, the rollers may act as one contact device for passing an electric current through the body from an external source, the other contact being held in the spare hand of the patient. In other cases, the handle of the appliance may be constructed to act as a weak electric battery.
