To all whom it may concern i Be it known that I, ALBERT FELDHEYM, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of. the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have made a new and useful invention-a wit, Improvements in a lilassage Instrument; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, concise, and exact description otthesame.
m This invention relates particularly to a massaging apparatus having means thereon for electrically heating an applicator element andtor equipping the applicator element with exposedterminalswhereby electric current may be charged into any surface with which said terminals contact.
An object of theinvention is to provide an applicator which may be detachably engaged with the threaded end of a motor armature shaft, and Whichis provided with an electric heating coil therein for heating said applicator, and additionally provided with exposed terminals, thereon through i which a source of electric current may be discharged into contact with any surface with which said terminals contact.
A further object of the invention is to provide a massaging instrument consisting of a motor having an armature shaft on which an applicator may be mounted, and having means secured to said motor and connected to said applicator for electrically heatingsaid applicator and chargingthe same with electricity. Fig. .4 is a plan section takenfthrough Fig. 1 onthc line In detail, the construction illustrated in the drawings comprises an electric motor 1 having an armature 2 mountedon theshaft 8, the ends of which are revoluhly journaled in said motor. ,The motor 1 has a handle 4: fiiiedly;secured thereon to be used for holding said motor during its use, said handle also servingas a conduit for guiding the wires 5 carrying the electric current to the motor 1.
The end 6 of the armature shaft 3 projects beyond its bearingand is threaded eX- teriorly to permit an applicaton'f to be do tachably engagedtherewith. The armature shaft 6, either inside or outside of the motor, is provided with two pairs of contact. rings 8,. 9, 10, and 11 thereon, all of whichare insulated from the said armature shaft. A bracket 12, formed of non-conducting material, is secured to-the motor 1 for: supporting a pair oi points 18 and 14 in contact with the first pair of rings 8 and 9. Lead wires 15 and 16 are connected to the respective points 13 and 14 for supplying,
currentthereto. A pair of lead wires 17 and 18 are arranged within the armature shaft 3 and connected tothe respective rings 8 and 9, said wires 17 and 18 being insulated from the said shaft. The'applicator 7is provided with a pair of lead wires 17 and 18 therein. which are adapted to contact with the wires 17 and 18 at the end where said applicator 7is attached to the armature shaft 3. The wires 17 and 18 are insu- ,lated from the material oi which the apbe transferred to the body of a patient, or
any surface with which ment contacts.
i The applicator element 7 is formed in two halves to provide exposed terminals 20 and 21, which are spaced apart by the-interposed insulating material 22. The terminals 20 said applicator eleand 21 and insulating material 22 are held together by the headless non-conducting screws 23.
Thus by supplylng a source of p A bracket 24, formed of non-conducting material, is secured to the motor 1 and provided with a pair of points and 26 thereon, which contact respectively with the rings 10 and 11 on the armature shaft Lead wires 27 and 28 supply electric current to and from the points 25 and 26, which said current is conveyed from the rings 8 and 9 by the insulated wires 29 and 30 to connection with each of the exposed terminals 20 and 21, forming the applicator element 7. The electric current used for running the motor 1 and for heating the resistance coil 19 might also be used to charge the termi nals 20 and 21 with electricity. However, I have shown an induction coil 32 mounted on the motor 1 to which the lead wires 27 and 28 are connected. The coil. 32 is charged with electricity from a battery 33 which is connected to said coil. The coil may thus be used to supply a small amount of electrical energy at high potential,the usual regulatory means Set on the coil, being provided for varying the potential.
Although I have shown and described a mechanism, for heating the applicator element and for charging the same with electricity, concealed within the motor housing, it is to be understood that it would be clearly within the purview of the invention, to place said mechanism on the outside of the motor, or to form the same as a part of the applicator element, and so construct it as to connect the same to a source of electrical energy. Thus a motor provided with an same time charging with electricity the surface being vibrated.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A device such as described, comprising a motor having an extended armature shaft: a source of electric current connected to said motor; an applicator detachably secured to said shaft; means in said applicator connected to said source of electric current for heating said applicator; and exposed positive and negative terminals on said applicator connected to said source of electric supply for passing faradic current to any surface with which said applicator terminals contact.
