Description

Carl J. Ernst, Milwaukee, Wis.
Application November 23, 1951, Serial No. 257,773
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in paint rollers, and more particularly to a novel paint roller having improved handle means.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the type provided with a handle which is so disposed that it does not interfere with the painting operation as do conventional handles on paint rollers now in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a paint roller which is perfectly balanced with reference to the handle thereon.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front view partly in elevation and partly in section of a paint roller embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral I refers to the device generally having an axial shaft Il with a plate l2 secured centrally thereto as by brazing I3. A shank member I4 of preferably light hollow material is secured to the plate I2 and has on its outer end the handle portion I5. A pair of cylinders I6 are mounted on the shaft II. Each cylinder I6 has an end recessed as at I'I and an enlarged bore as at I8 and I9 at each end thereof. Each cylinder I6 is centrally bored as at 20 and the enlarged bores I8 and I9 accommodate the sleeve bearings 2l embracing the shaft II. The shaft I I is tapped at each end as at 22 to accommodate the end screws 23 which secure a circular cap plate 24 within each recess I 1. Each cylinder I6 has a spacer rim 25 or ridge which is circular and bears against the plate I2. Each cylinder I6 is provided with a spring 26 anchored adjacent the inner end of said cylinder as at 21 thereof, the said spring being bent arcuately to air centrally, outwardly of said cylinder. A sleeve of sheepskin 28 is provided for each cylinder I6 and is retained thereon by action of the spring 26. Each cylinder I6 is slotted longitudinally as at 29 to retain the spring 26 in parallel relation with the shaft I I. the slots being rectangular in cross section.
In use, the paint roller I0 is grasped by the handle I and rolled backwardly and forwardly in paint held in a conventional paint roller tray. It will be understood that by reason of the central attachment of the shank I4, the handles will not be in the way during a painting operation. Either end of the roller I0 may be used at the outside margin of the surface to be painted.
When it is necessary to clean the sheepskin sleeves 28, they can be slipped oi the cylinders I6 and immersed in a paint cleaning agent. At the contiguous edges of the sheepskin sleeves 28, an unpainted streak of surface may at times be left, but this is remedied by the usual painting process of cross hatching as the operator proceeds. The divided structure of the roller facilitates turning of the roller during a painting operation.
1t will be understood that the device is capable of many modicaticns in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
A paint roller including an elongated shaft, a pair of cylinders mounted for rotation on said shaft, a sleeve bearing held internally in each end of each cylinder for true alignment of said cylinders on said shaft, each cylinder having an exterior full length longitudinal slot therein rectangular in cross section, a rod spring radially imbedded in the bottom of each slot adjacent an end thereof bent to overlie convexly said slot with its free end riding therein, a paint applicator sleeve entirely covering each cylinder, the adjacent ends of the applicator sleeves when in operative position being suiciently close so that there is substantially no unpainted strip between said applicator sleeves when the roller is being used, a handle xed centrally of said shaft between said cylinders, that portion of said handle between the cylinders being formed as a relatively thin plate centrally apertured to receive said shaft, and a circular concentrically disposed ridge on the inner end of each cylinder adapted to bear against the plate portion of said handle.
