9948. Kessler, E. July 8. Couplings, disconnectible; with valves.-Relates to valved couplings for hose and like pipes, particularly for brake-pipes on railway vehicles. In a coupling for two similar coupler-beads, as shown, each head comprises a main casing a, Fig. 1, carrying a perforated diaphragm b of known type, a rotatable cover k having attached thereto a spindle g supporting a spring-pressed carrier f for separate disks or closures o for each passage c in the diaphragm b, an abutment w serving as a guide for an extension v on the other hand, and a wing or handle t on the cover k arranged out of the path of the other coupler-head. The abutment w is adapted to rotate the opposite cover k on its casing by engaging an arm j on the cover, the rotation being limited by a pin n, Fig. 2, engaging a segmental groove i in the casing. Preferably, the diaphragm b has three passages c arranged at angular distances of 120 degrees, the groove i extending an angular distance of 60 degrees. The action of the coupling is as follows. When the coupler-heads are brought together and then rotated to their extreme position as determined by stops x, Fig. 2, the extensions v are guided and engaged by the abutments w, which, at the same time rotate the cover k and closures o so as to open the passages c. The cover k and closures o will remain in this open position, although the coupling be broken or the heads accidentally rotated or uncoupled, the passages c being closed again only when the covers k are rotated in the reverse direction by manual operation of the handles t to uncouple the heads. The couplerheads are also suitable for coupling with other heads of ordinary constructions.
