Description

H. WALG'H. AIR BRAKE GQUPLXNG. APPLIOATOH'EILED AUG. 10, 1910 Patente@ Das. '26,191'i.'
@woe/Mofo I ',E Pfeil@ HERMAN WALCH, OF MASONCITY, IOWA, ASSIGNOR QF NEeHALF TQ PATRXCK DOUGrI-IERTY, 0F MASON CTY, ION..
AIR-BRAKE UPLING.
To all whom 'it may concern. l
Be it known that HERMAN l/VALCi-i, a citizen of the United States, residing at. Mason City, in the county of Cerro Gordo and State ot' lo "a, have invented new and useful improvements in Air-Brake Coupling's. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved air brake coupling and has Jfor its principal object to equip an automatic car coupling ot any preferred type with my improvement, whereby when the cars are coupled or uncoupled the air brake line will also be automatically coupled or uncoupled, and thus in this manner my invention will dispense with the services ot the brakeman now coinmonly employed for coupling and uncoupling air brake lines.
Another object of the invention is to provide a coupling of the class described which is extremely simple in construction, positive in operation and cheap to install.
lilith these` and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in thel claims hereto appended; it being` understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope ot' the claims, may be resorted to without departing trom the spirit or sacritcing' any of the advantages of the invention.
ln the drawing, Figure l is a top plan. view oi a coupling showingl my improved air brake coupling associated therewith, Fig. 2 is a side elevation ot' the same, Fig. 3 is a partial sectional view taken on the line 3-3 ot Fig. 1, and Fig. 4i. is a perspective view of one ot' the air valves.
Like reference numerals designate corresponding partsl in all the figures ot the Specication of Letters Patent.

the ears 8-t^3 or" the said extension. Packing rings 11--11 oit any suitablevmaterial, are respectively arranged between the ears 8 and the leaf 1G for a purpose hereinafter described. A. pivot pin 12, for the knuckles 9, is composed oi a rounded shank 13, a squared head 1,4 and a projecting nipple 15. The shank of this pin passes through the ears 8 and the leaf 1t) and the squared head 1.4 is seated within a correspondingly shaped recess 16, formed in one ot the said ears 8, the nipple 15 thereby projecting beyond the said ear 8. It will be observed at this point thatthe pin is held inV immovable position While the knuckle can be swung around thereon. Formed within the pin is a longi tudinal channel 17 having one end Corinthe.a nicating with the nipple 15 and the other end communicating centrally with the exterior ot' the pin.
Respectively termed in the body of the knuckles and contiguous to the opposed faces thereof, are dove-tailed recesses 18. Also formed in each ot the said knuckles is a channel or air duct 19 .which communieates with the said recess 18 and the channel 17 termed in the said pin. Seated With* in each ot the said recesses 18 is a gasket member Q0, preferably termed or" rubber, although any other material may be employed if desired. This member comprises a body portion 21 ot' dove-taile l shape and adapted to be normally held within the said recess 18 by its peculiar shape, and an end tinge 22 adapted to normally project beyond the outer tace ot the knuckle, said flange being provided centrally witha. depression 23 and a` longitudinal channel 24 which com municat'es with the said depression 23 and the channel 19. i
lonnected to the nipple 15 is an air pipe Coil springs 2G 26 are preferably i'nonnted within each of the coupling heads 5 to bear against the knuckle 9 and thereby assist in holdingthe said lianges oit each gasket member 2G in tight relation.
Frein the tore-going, it will be seen that when the knuckles of the coupling are in the position shown in l? 1, air canv pass from the pipe through the channel 17 of the pin into the channel 19 rined in the knuckle and through the gasket member 20, and so on. llhen, however, it desired to uncouple the ear, the knuckles S) will of course be swung about 'the pivots 12 and as a result the channels 19 will be thrown out of register with the channel 17 and thereb automatically out o" the supply of air. Sb multaneously with this'movement, any air which may tend to leak from around the pin 'will be prevented 'by the packing rings ylil-11.
When it is desired to couple the car the knuckles will necessarily be swung into the osition shown in F ig. 1 and the air line f etweenthe knuckles and the pi e will be automatically opened, as herein efore described. y
A socket 30 is formed upon each of the coupler heads 5 to receive corresponding Iipsl of the opposed coupler heads, Whereby these coupler heads are held against relative vertical movement.
Having thus fully described my inventio'iu, what I claim is :4- l f l. A combined car coupler and air pipe `coupling comprising a coupler head, a non* rotatable pivot pin carried by Said head and provided With a pipe receiving nipple, said 251pin lhaving an air channel communicating A|`7 with the exterior through said nipple and a knuckle journaled on said pin and provided y with an air channel having one of its openings at the inner side of the lmuckle tongue the other opening of said channel registering with the air channel of the pivot pin in the closed position of the knuckle.
2. A combined car coupler and air pipe coupling comprising a cou ler head, a nonrotatable pivot pin carried y said head and provided with a pipe receivmg nipple, said pin having an air channel communicating with the exterior through said nipple and a knuckle journaled on said pin and provided with an air channel having one of its openings at the inner side of the knuckle tongue the other opening of said channel registering with the air channel of the pivot pin in the closed position of the knuckle, said knuckle being provided adjacent its inner face With a dove-tailed scat and a resilient gasket member in said seat Which comprises a projecting yielding flange.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in peesence of two subscribing Witnesses.
` HERMAN VALCH.
