Abstract

9390. Mower, G. A., and Sturtevant Engineering Co. June 26. Filtering.-Filter bags are provided with frames at each end which, in order to clean the bags, are periodically brought together and suddenly released so that they are separated by their weight, the jerk which occurs when the bags are tightened expelling the dust. Suction is stopped while the bags are being cleaned. In the apparatus shown, the bags are divided into series contained within chambers connected to a suction chamber 2 through valves 19, which allow any series to be cut off from the suction and opened to the atmosphere when it is to be cleaned. The filter bags are connected to upper and lower frames 6, 7, while beneath the lower frames bellows-like members 9 form continuations of the filters. The frames are suspended by cords 10 passing over pulleys 11, the greater weight of the lower frames keeping the bags taut. Shaking-mechanism is arranged over each section and driven from a common shaft 12, on which are a series of worms driving wormwheels 15, each of which actuates shaking- devices for two series of filters. With each worm-wheel is associated a cam 16 co-operating with rollers on the ends of bell-crank levers 17, 17<a>, the connecting-rods 18 of which periodically shut the valves 19 and open each filter chamber in turn to the atmosphere. At the same time, a cam-path 20 on the top of the worm-wheel actuates a lever which throws in a clutch to drive one of two shaking-cams 22, 22a. This cam depresses a lever 25, which in turn depresses a rod 27 on the frame 6. The bags are thus collapsed and extended several times while their chambers are open to the atmosphere. The dust is collected in a hopper 3. The cams may be arranged to operate the first filter set of each pair in turn and then the second set.
