Abstract
8569. Foster, W. J. June 10. Annealing.-The casings of explosive shells are made of cast iron of best malleable quality in such a way that the metal is the most brittle at or near the centre of its thickness and the softest on the outside and inside surfaces of the walls, so as to facilitate bursting into fragments. With this object, the shell casing is cast, preferably nose down, in a chilling mould, and after cooling is heated very gradually in an ordinary annealing furnace to a full red heat; the casting is then cooled very gradually. The whole annealing operation may occupy about ninety-six hours.
