Abstract

8207. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckhammer G. T. June 2. Ordnance breech mechanism.-Relates to primer-lock firing-mechanism of the kind in which the lock-frame carries a pivoted hammer on which the striker is mounted, the final firing movement of the hammer being effected by momentum and against the action of a spring which causes the striker to rebound. According to the invention, the end of the main spring which urges the hammer forward to fire the gun is caused to be displaced in the reverse direction by the momentum of the hammer. Fig. 5 shows in sectional plan the hammer C carrying the striker C' pivotally mounted on a pin c attached to the lock-frame B. To fire the gun, the hammer is retracted against the action of a spring plunger c<2> and, when released, is urged forwards until arrested by a surface b<1X> on the lock frame; the final firing movement of the hammer taking place about a corner b<x> on the frame, against the action of the spring plunger c<2>, owing to the elongated hole c<1> which surrounds the pivot pin c. The reaction of the spring plunger then retracts the striker to bring it within the front face of the lock-frame.
