Abstract

26,386. Dawson, A. T., and Buckham, G. T. Nov. 21.. Ordnance breech mechanism.-Consists in the application of slip - lock firing-mechanism of the type described in Specification No. 8286A, A.D. 1905, to guns having primer locks. Fig. 5 is a vertical section, and Fig. 11 a side view of one construction. The striker D is retracted by a spring-pressed cocking-piece G pivoted at g to a " firing-cam " E, and is released by the depression of the cocking-piece by an incline d<3> on the casing D<2> of the striker. The firing-cam is returned after firing, to the position shown, by a torsion spring e<2>, and effects the withdrawal of the nose of the striker by the engagement of a projecting arm E<2> with a projection D<6> on the striker sheath D<4>. A sleeve d<2>, which loosely surrounds a collar d on the striker, forms a front bearing for the mainspring D<1>, and enables the striker to move forwards by its own momentum after the motion of the spring and sleeve d<2> have been arrested. The trigger F<1> is mounted upon the gun cradle, and actuates the firing-cam E through intermediate levers F<2>, K<2>, K<1>, J<2>, J<1>, E<1>, mounted upon parallel axes F<3> , K, J, e arranged respectively upon the cradle, gun, swinging-carrier, and lock.frame A. In a modification, shown in under-plan in Fig. 15, the trigger F is pivoted at F<5> below the lock-frame, and engages by means of the projection F<4>, according to the direction in which the trigger is pulled, with one of the pivoted sector-gears E<3>, E<4>, the former of which is mounted upon the axle e of the firing-cam E, so that the gun may be discharged by pulling the trigger from either side. A recess b in the box-slide B is arranged so as to permit the trigger to be pulled only when the lock-frame A is in its completely closed position. The nose of the striker may be retracted as before, or the projection F' on the trigger may be caused to act upon a cam-surface D<8> to press back the sheath D4.
