5141. Mitchell, J. P. April 3. Washing-machines with plungers and dollies having both rotary and axially-reciprocating motion.-The machine, which is independent of the tub containing the clothes, so that a number of tubs can be brought up to it and treated in succession, comprises a standard A supporting a vertical shaft L and two horizontal shafts B, G. The shaft L carries the possers 0, while the shaft B carries belt pulleys and is geared to the shaft G by spur-wheels E, F. An eccentric on the shaft G communicates a vertical reciprocating motion to the balanced rocking levers K and thus reciprocates the possers. On the down-stroke, this movement is transmitted through the cushioning-spring U. During the vertical movement, an arm T on the rocking levers operates a pawl-carrying rod Sand rotates a ratchet-wheel feathered on the shaft L.
