Abstract

2714. Edwardson, E. Feb. 19. Coating-machines.-In a machine for glueing the backs of books, but, according to the Provisional Specification, applicable to coating other solid articles, the glue is applied by rotary brushes D<1>, D<2> which are mounted adjustably in a jacketed glue-pot 10 or in contact with a roller dipping into the glue-pot, and after passing the brushes, surplus glue is removed by rubber or like strips 14 clamped on blocks 12 adjustably mounted on slides on the opposite sides of the glue-pot. The glue-pot is adjustable by means of screws 17 passing through brackets 18 carried by the lower flanges 2 of the main channel-section framepieces A. The upper flanges 1 of the frame A form rails 4, upon which run doubly flanged wheels 31 of the book-carriage 30. For further securing the carriage against lateral displacement, downwardly-extending pieces 32 are provided having lugs 33 which project under the upper flanges 1. At the feed-end of the machine is a table 5, upon which the books are arranged back downwards ready to be clamped between plates 34, 34 on the carriage 30, Fig. 2. The plate 34 is adjustable by means of a rod 35 having a series of holes 38, into one of which a pin 37 in a hole in a boss on the carrier 30 is inserted. The plate 34 may be adjusted by screw, cam, or rack action, the means shown comprising a rack 39 on a rod 35 and a pinion 40 on a spindle 41. A handle 42, carrying a lever 43 and pawl 44 engaging a fixed ratchet segment 45, is provided for advancing the plate 34 and locking it in position, unlocking being effected by pressing the lever 43. The carriage is traversed over the glueing-device by rack-and-pinion gear, or an eccentric and connecting-rod, or, as shown by endless chains 46 passing around pulleys 47, 48 on spindles 49, 51, the former being arranged in fixed bearings, and the latter in bearings sliding in a slide 52. The carriage carries a lug 65 adapted to engage at each end of its travel with a stop 66 on a clutch rod 64 connected, through a cranked spindle 62, fork 61, and collar 60, with a clutch member 59 sliding between bevel-wheels 57, 58, which are loose on the main shaft 27 and drive a shaft 55 connected by gearing 54 with the spindle 49 of the pulley 47. The glueing-disks D', D<2> are driven at a speed to cause relative motion between the work and the brush, by a chain 25 from the main shaft 27, the two brushes being shown geared together by a second chain, but both may be directly driven in the same or in opposite directions. A series of knife-edges 8 is provided near the discharge end of the machine to support the books when released (by hand) from the clamping-device. The books may be arranged to travel in the direction of their length, as shown, or by modifying the arrangement of the clamp, transversely. To protect the ends of the work, guard-plates may be provided attached to the plate 34 or the carriage 30. According to the Provisional Specification, the same effect may be secured by causing the brushes to rotate in the same direction as the work travels, but at a greater speed. Instead of the reciprocating carriage, there may be used a clamping chain conveyer passing between converging and diverging guides, such apparatus being known in the bookbinding trade.
