Abstract

1672. Holliday, A., and Ward, G. E. Feb. 2. H y p o c h lorites, obtaining; e l e c - trodes; surfaces, preparing; e l e c - trolytes, agitating. -F o r making liquor for bleaching and other purposes, parallel electrode plates b alternately of opposite polarity are mounted close together in a movable frame in such a way that any plate can be removed from below the frame without disturbing t h e others. Means for protecting the connexions a n d for causing circulation of the electrolyte are provided. As shown, the frame consists of a top plate a' carrying the terminals, two uprights a, and bottom and side bars e<1>, d grooved to receive the plates. The bottom bar e<1> is secured to the uprights by means of tongues and grooves or the like, so that it can be removed and individual plates taken out. To allow of deep immersion of the plates, they are provided with long vertical connecting-lugs f, preferably coated with acid-proof solution and enclosed in acid-proof non-conducting material, rubber washers being placed between the lugs and the top plate a'. A partition l between the lugs promotes circulation of the electrolyte, and cooling-coils maybe placed at the ends of the tank for the same purpose. Bus-bars above the top plate a<1> are separated by a partition j, and all the connexions are protected by a cover j'. A current of 600 amperes at 4 volts may be employed in a tank holding 150 gallons. Several sets of electrodes in separate tanks may be connected in series. The electrodes may be cleaned by reversing the current.
