Liquefying.-In the liquefaction of gases by expansion without utilization nf external work, the gas passing through the exchanger is subjected to the cooling action of a mixture of the gas passing from the liquefying-vessel and a pre-cooled volume of the same gas from the same or a different source. Fig. 2 shows a form of apparatus wherein the additional gas passes through a heat-exchanger m and a refrigerator j to the heat-exchange column a of the liquefying-apparatus, mixing with and further cooling the gas passing through this column, and being drawn off in part through the upper pipe i to the heat-exchanger m. In a modification, the whole of the mixed gas may be drawn off from an upper throttled part of the column a to the exchanger m; while, in a third form, the upper pipe is dispensed with, the whole of the gas passing off at the top of the column a while the exchanger m draws its supply from a branch pipe led from the (lower) pipe i. Fig. 3 shows a form of apparatus for the separation of oxygen and nitrogen from air, in which a pipe b leads the air through the exchange column a to the bottom of the liquefying-tank d, wherein it is continued as a vaporizing-coil n connected with another air-admission pipe o descending through an exchanger p or through the liquid oxygen delivery pipe. From the junction of the pipe o and coil n rises a pipe q, inverted at its top and provided with an expansion valve r, through which liquid air is delivered on to plates s constituting a rectifier, from which nitrogen rises through the column a, mixing with the supercooled gas from the circuit i ....i<1>, while the liquid oxygen collecting at the bottom of the tank rises through the pipe p.
