Abstract
378. Railing, A. H., and Garrard, C. C. Jan. 9. Couplings. - Consists in securing the metallic armouring of a cable to a joint box, terminal box. &c. of the kind which is divided in the plane of the cable into an upper and lower half, by a clamping- member bolted or screwed to the lower half of the box independently of the upper half, so that the cable may be completely supported before the joint is made, and the upper half of the box subsequently clamped in position. In the case of wire armouring, the clamping-device comprises an externally coned and flanged clamping-member C, Fig. 2, secured, as shown, to the end of the lower half of the box; the cable armouring E is splayed out around the member C. which is engaged by a flanged and internally coned clamping-member D, threaded over the bolts that secure the member C to the box and firmly held bv nuts B<2>. In the case of cables with armouring of steel tapes, a circular form of clamp is employed, consisting of two halves; the lower half C<1>, Fig. 3, being fixed to the lower half of the box by bolts B, and the upper half C<2> clamped to the lower half by bolts B<3>. An extra bolt B<4> may be provided to afford an additional anchorage of the clamp to the upper half of the box.
