Abstract
184. Fulton, J. S. S., and Morris, R. J. Jan. 5. Grates; fuel, feeding. -A cooling system for a steam-generator furnace grate having inclined series of bars, alternately fixed and movable, comprises a feedpipe for each series connected to the water space of the boiler and provided with a non- return valve, and an exhaust pipe in communication with the steam space. Water from the boiler enters the system through the non-return valve and flashes at short intervals into steam. The two sets of bars are carried by pairs of fixed and movable supports 3, 13, the latter of which rest at their lower ends on rollers 18 and are operated by eccentrics 34. The front edge of each bar is thickened and surrounds a water-tube connected by a U-bendwith the tubes of the adjacent bars in the same series. The uppermost tube of the fixed set communicates with a cooling-pipe in the back 10 of the feed-hopper. Non-return valves 27 are interposed in the feed-pipes 9, 24, and the upper ends of the two systems are connected to the steam space of the boiler by the pipes 11, 23. The straps 35 of the eccentrics 34 are formed integrally with arms 35<1> pivoted to the upper ends of the movable supports 13, and set-screws 49 bearing against the euds of the supports 13 are provided to enable the motion of the upper ends of the supports to be varied between an elliptical motion and one of reciprocation. When this latter motion is desired, the set-screws are adjusted until the supports 13 rest on the rollers 15. The feed-hopper comprises a pusher 40, which reciprocates beneath a hinged plate 38 and is operated from the shaft 30 by an eccentric and a rocking-lever 41. A dump-plate 50 is provided at the lower end of the grate.
