Abstract

191,433. Broaden, T. W. E. Sept. 15, 1921. Springs, arrangement of.-A leaf-spring suspension of the kind in which means are provided for varying the leverage through which road wheel shocks are transmitted to the spring, comprises a spring movably or slidably connected to a radius rod connecting the axle, or axle casing, to the chassis, together with means for bodily moving the spring relatively to the chassis and radius rod. A semi-elliptical spring 1, Fig. 1, connected to the chassis by shackles 10, 11, is pivoted at 2 to an internally-screwed carrier 3 engaged by a screwed sleeve 4 which is arranged to rotate without endwise movement on the radius rod 5. In a modification, the carrier 3 is mounted to slide directly on the radius rod and is moved lonaitudinally thereon by a rotatable screw carried by the radius rod. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the carrier 3. slides on the rod 5, and one end of the spring 1 is connected to a member 16 arranged to slide on the chassis and to be moved longitudinally thereon by a screwed rod 13. In the application to a cantilever spring shown in Fig. 6, the, axle end of the spring 1 is connected to a member 20 sliding on the rod 5, while the centre and other end of the spring are connected to members 3. 16 which slide on the chassis, and one or both of which are engaged by the adjusting screw 13. The invention may also be applied to quarter elliptic and full elliptic springs. The screwed sleeve or rod may be adjusted by hand or automatically. The hand adjustment may comprise a nut and spanner, or a bobbin and cable &c. operated from the driver's seat; the automatic adjustment comprises a pinion on the screwed sleeve or rod gearing with a rack depending from the chassis in the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, or extending upwards from the radius rod in the arrangements shown in Figs. 4 and 6.
