A nipper wheel or cam i mounted in the casing a has an eccentric portion k over which is fitted the eccentric hole l in the cam-block g fitted with a handle h. The cam-block g fits in an opening f in the slide plate d which carries the gripping- jaw e. When the rope x is placed in the jaw e, the rope is gripped between the jaw and the nipper-wheel i by turning the handle h to the extreme right-hand position. The pull on the rope then tends tn rotate the wheel i and so tighten the grip.
