Tables, slides, and carriages.-The tailstock J of a cylindrical grinding machine is carried by a slide D having a length the same, or substantially the same, as that of the guiding- surface A<2>; this construction prevents local wear of the guiding - surfaces and consequent want of alinement of the centres H, G. A cover-plate L is attached to the slide and covers the guiding-surface in the most extreme position of the slide to the left. The slide is adapted to carry a steady-rest M on its inclined upper surface, and grooves a<1> are formed on the inclined surface to direct water into the trough a. The guiding-surface is formed on an upwardly projecting part A' of an adjustable plate A mounted on the sliding table B of the machine, and the part A' extends throughout the greater portion of the length of the plate; the slide may be clamped in position by a handle E.
