Abstract

18,084. Davies, H. G. L., and Mitchell, R. C. July 31. Automatic-feed weighers.-In an automatic weighing-machine, the feed is controlled by convex shutters meeting in a plane above their axes of rotation. The material from a hopper a<2>, Fig 5, falls into a weighing-receptacle 6 mounted on a beam 2. The beam in tilting causes a rod 7 to knock up a pivoted catch r, thereby freeing a rod t connected by a link t<2> to a main feedshutter b of convex shape. The shutter b is geared by toothed quadrants e, e<2> to a similar shutter b<2>, and on the release of the rod t a spring i draws the shutters across the feed-orifice and shuts off the feed with the exception of a dribble through an orifice in the meeting edges of the shutters. In a similar manner, the beam releases supplementary convex shutters c, c' which entirely cut off the feed. The movement of the supplementary shutters releases a catch from a hinged discharge gate at the base of the weighing-receptacle, which then discharges its contents. The weighing-receptacle then rises and the discharge gate closes under the influence of a counterweight, and in closing pushes up a sliding rod which by means of intermediate mechanism allows a stop pin w to fall. The stop pin releases a pin v forming part of a clutch mechanism and thereby causes a disk m to rotate. A roller m<2> on the disk m operates a toothed quadrant n, n<2> and reopens the main feed-shutters b, b<2>, the supplementary shutters c, c<2> being simultaneously drawn back by connexions from the main shutters. A depending arm z on the rod t again raises the stop pin w to disconnect the clutch, and the catch r retains .the rod t, positive engagement therewith being ensured by the impact of the rod end with a depending arm r', Fig. 9. In the forward movement of the rod t, a projection t<3> raises the catch r clear of the rod 7. A similar catch is used to retain the supplementary shutters c, c<2>. If from any cause the discharge gate of the weighing-receptacle 6 does not close, the stop pin w is not allowed to fall, and therefore prevents the rotation of the disk m and consequent opening of the feed-shutters. A serrated wheel 25 engaging a lever 27 oscillates an agitator 29 situated near the feed-orifice. The exit to the feed-hopper may be adjusted in size by means of horizontal sliding shutters 23 having depending plates 24 shaped to the curvature of the feed-shutters.
