Abstract

13,149. Johnson, J. Y., [Badische Anilin & Soda Fabrik]. May 28. [Cognate Application, 15,334/14.] Catalytic agents, preparation and treatment of.-Aromatic amines are prepared by passing the corresponding nitro-compound, together with hydrogen, over a catalytic agent containing copper prepared pyrogenetically from a salt thereof and also containing a body promoting the action of the copper. Suitable promoters are alkali compounds, in particular alkali silicate, magnesia, aluminium and other metal oxides and other heavy metals or compounds thereof, such as an oxide or salt of zinc, silver, or iron. The body promoting the action may be added to the copper salt before its conversion, or to the copper oxide intermediately obtained, or to the finely divided copper itself. Water gas or other gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide may be used as the source of hydrogen. In examples: a paste of copper oxalate and magnesia is dried, and reduced in hydrogen, and the catalytic agent used to effect the reduction by hydrogen of o-nitrotoluene vapour; a paste of pumice, sodium silicate, copper carbonate, and zinc carbonate is reduced in hydrogen, and the catalytic agent obtained used for the reduction of nitrobenzene vapour; a paste of pumice, sodium silicate, copper carbonate, and zinc carbonate is reduced in hydrogen, and the catalytic agent obtained used for the reduction of nitrobenzene vapour; a paste of pumice, sodium silicate, copper carbonate, and iron carbonate is reduced in hydrogen, and the catalytic agent used in the reduction of nitrobenzene vapour; a mixture of pumice, copper and zinc carbonates, and water-glass is dried, and reduced in hydrogen and the catalytic agent used to effect the reduction by purified water gas of nitrobenzene vapour. Specification 2306/14 is referred to.
