Consists in a belt-filling machine which, by the reversal of the feed-wheels and alteration of the cartridge pushers, is convertible into a beltemptying machine. The belt is fed forwards by two wheels K I, K II, the teeth of which are shaped to fit around the cartridges, and which are rotated step by step by a pawl b engaging a ratchet-wheel R on the shaft of one of the feed-wheels. The pusher L is reciprocated by a rack H operated by a toothed segment on the lower end of the pawl shaft s, and returned by a spring o. The conversion of the machine, for emptying belts, is made by removing the feedwheels from their shafts and turning them about so that the full belt is fed through the machine with the bullet ends of the cartridges presented to the pusher. A special pusher may be used, of greater length than the pusher L, or this may be elongated. If the feed-wheels are not turned about, the machine may be run backwards, and the cartridges withdrawn from the belt by tongues or a hook on the pusher.
