Abstract

12,459. Eastwick, J. May 20. Breech actions, sliding breech-block; breech actions, sliding barrel and breech-block; indicating when loaded, means for, applicable generally. - Relates to rotary magazines that are operated by the longitudinal movements of the breech-bolt and consists (a) in special operating-mechanism, (b) in means for indicating when a cartridge is in the barrel, and (c) in means for indicating the number of cartridges in the magazine. The magazine is rotated without the use of spring pawls or catches. In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 5, 10, and 11, the operating-mechanism comprises two bellcrank 'levers 10, 11 actuated by transverse slides 12, 13 and acting on two ratchet-wheels 8, 9. In a modification, a transverse reciprocating slide 16, Figs. 12 and 13, takes the place of the two bell-crank levers. The magazine is disengaged from its actuating-mechanism (a) by the insertion of a charging clip, or (b) by a cutoff, for single loading, or (c) when a cartridge is in the chamber. The magazine is keyed to a spindle 6 on which the ratchet-wheels are mounted, but the spindle is capable of an independent longitudinal movement for the purpose of moving the ratchet-wheels out of engagement with the bell-crank levers. The spindle is pressed back (a) when a cartridge charger is inserted, the charger acting on an inclined surface 21 on a cross-bar mounted at the rear of the spindle, (b) when the cut-off, comprising an eccentric 25, Fig. 9, acting on the bottom of the cross-bar 20, is rotated, and (c) when there is a. cartridge in the chamber of the barrel, the cartridge depressing a plunger 28, which acts through levers 29, 30 on the spindle. The plunger 28 may also work an indicator 32 for indicating when the gun is loaded. The front of the spindle may actuate a numbered wheel for indicating the number of cartridges in the magazine. For holding the cartridges in place in the magazine, notched diaphragms 7 are provided, the rear one engaging the groove at the base of the cartridge, and the forward one a groove 37 formed in the bullet. Specification 14,016/13 is referred to.
