[Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Magneto electric machines rotary machines ; exciting. - A lighting - dynamo and an ignition generator f o r use on motor-vehicles are assembled together in a compact manner, and common parts may be utilized as far as is possible for their magnetic circuits. Fig. 1 shows a lighting-dynamo 3, 4 and an ignition magneto 1, 2 secured end to end, the armatures 1, 3 being geared together by wheels 7, 8. The dynamo 3, 4 may be used as a motor to start up the petrol engine, reducing- gearing located, for instance, inside the gearwheel 7, being brought temporarily into action. The armatures may b e arranged in line w i t h each other and may be connected either directly or by epicyclic gearing. The dynamo and magneto elements may be superposed as shown in Figs. 2, 5, and 10 ; the dynamo field-magnet coils 6 and the permanent magnets 2 are arranged in such a manner in relation to the magnetic circuits of the two machines that the flux of the permanent magnets through the armature 3 ensures re-starting in the proper direction, while the flux due to the coils 6, when the machines are running, increases the flux in the armature 1 and constantly re-magnetizes the magnets 2. The magneto armature shown in Fig. 2 is of the H-type, but, as shown in Fig. 5, the high and low tension coils 15 may be stationary when a rotating magnet 2 of bell or other shape is used. As shown in Fig. 10, the dynamo armature may have one or more short-circuited pairs of brushes 17, 18 for producing the dynamo excitation. Other modifications are described, in which the dynamo has four poles while the magneto has two poles ; special magnets or armatures may be used to produce the dynamo exciting-currents. The ignition generator may have magnets of soft iron or dynamo steel excited by coils.
