Abstract

11,221. Pettigrew, J. May 6. Dust, excluding; oil, retaining. -A railwayvehicle axle-box is fitted with a two-part dustshield d encircling the axle, and a single-part shield e in contact with the lower side of the journal, the parts being pressed against the axle by springs k. The dust-shields are contained in recesses b, c, closed at the lower side by a common plate i provided with leather packing j. The shield parts are built up of layers m of fabric clamped between wooden cheeks and faced with leather n to produce surfaces flush with those of the wooden cheeks. The adjacent portions of the upper and lower parts of the shield d overlap each other. In the case of the shield c, the leather n is replaced by absorbent fabric r, for the purpose of holding the lubricant. to prevent its escape and to lubricate the shoulder g<1> of the journal. A. slotted tray s, pressed upwards by a spring u, contains absorbent material to lubricate the journal. The tray may be of thin sheet-metal stiffened by wires v, Fig. 10. soldered thereto.
