Abstract

7831. Wood, E. J. April 1. Dust, excluding; oil, retaining.-A guard for excluding dust from, and retaining oil in, axleboxes for railway and tramway vehicles comprises two pressed plates a, b, of zinc, mild steel, or other suitable material, carrying leather &c. rings e, Fig. 4, in contact with the axle. The inner edges a<3> of the plates are turned over in the same direction and rounded as shown. The leather rings e are attached to flat surfaces a<2> pressed out of the plane of the plates in such a way that the rings e do not project beyond the outer surfaces of the plates. The springs f that press the plates a, b into contact with the sides of the chamber containing the guard are guided by lugs g punched out of the metal of the plates as shown in Fig. 6. The outer edges of the plates are flanged and are connected together by flexible strips h. One of the plates and leather rings may be omitted.
