Abstract

Lathes; indexing. - In a lathe for milling screw-threads, the lead screw and chuck spindle are driven from a common wheel B<8>, Fig. 3, by separate and distinct gear trains. That for the lead screw comprises change gearing H which may be driven directly or through an idler K carried by a pivoted arm J. The chuck is driven by a worm-wheel L<8>, Fig. 6, meshing with a worm on a sleeve L<6> connected to a shaft L<2> through an index head, comprising a holed plate L<4> and locating-pin. The shaft L<2> is geared to a shaft g<4> driven by change gearing G. The wheel B<8> is driven from a belt pulley B', Fig. 8, through a clutch B' and a reversing- mechanism, comprising a fixed train B<2>, a variable train B", and a clutch B<3> controlled by a hand-lever C<4>, Fig. 1, which may be actuated by stops o, o<1> and a dog e on the saddle. A spring pin and recesses n locate the engaged and disengaged positions of the clutch. The variable train drives during the cutting-stroke. The milling-cutter spindle E<4> is laterally and angularly adjustable on the slide E<2> and is driven through splined shafts and worm gearing E<6> from a wheel D on the main shaft.
