Abstract

[Addition to 24,561/10.] Trimming.-The insole 32 on a last 30 is trimmed around the heel to the shank by a frusto-conical cutter 10 acting in conjunction with an adjustable shearing-plate 36. The upper surface of an inclined support 4 is provided with guideways 12, 14 in which downwardly projecting tongues on bracket members 16, 18 are adjustably secured by bolts 20, 22. The bracket 16 carries a plate 24 which is independently adjustable endways in the bracket by means of a clamp 34. The plate has a curved portion 26 to conform to the cutter, and a lip 28 which projects between the bottom surface of the last and the insole. The second slidable bracket 18 carries not only the independently adjustable shearing-plate 36 which supports the edge of the bottom face of the insole, but also a member 40 wherein is adjusted a spring-pressed plunger 42, which bears against the insole to form a rest for the work. The cutter is protected by a shield 50, and the chips are withdrawn by a fan or the like through a conduit 52. In use, the insole is positioned to be trimmed by a cut substantially in the direction of the height of the last, the cutting-edges being vertical. When trimming near the shank, the plunger 42 is depressed by turning the last so as to produce a longer bevel at the edges.
