BAZZONI, or swAMPsoo'r'r, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR To UNITED SHOE MACHINERYCOBPOBATIQN, or rarEEsoN, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION oENEw JERSEY EEL-COvEE-T MMING Mamm Application filed Mays This invention relates to machines for trimming heel coverings and is herein illustrated as embodied in a machine for trimming .coverings attached to heelsto prepare the marginal portions of the coverings for insertion in grooves in the breasts of the heels.
In covering ungrooved Cuban heels 1t 1s generally the practice to cover the rear portion and the sides of the heel with one piece of covering material and to turn the forward marginal portions of the covering over the breast corners of the heel and adhesive-1y to secure them to the breast of the heel in such" a manner that one of the marginal portions will overlap .the other, the seam formed be: tween the overlapping marginal portions oi the covering being located approximately at the central portion of the'breast. There are certain disadvantages in heels covered as described above, one being that the seams formed by the overlapped portions of the coverings are likely to breakopen and thus detract from the appearance of the shoe.
In order to overcome this disadvantage and to provide durable heels which are neat in appearance, certain improved features of covered heel construction :have' been disclosed and claimed in United States Letters Patent Nos. 1,7 04,204 and 1,718,177 issued March 5,
1929, and June 18,1929, respectively, on ap- 7 1,718,177, a heel is providedhaving a'groove in the centre of its breast and extending generally height-wise of the heel, into which groove a. one-piece covering stretched over and conforming to the rear, sides and breast surfaces of the heel has its marginalportions inserted and secured therein Asset forth in the above-mentioned Letters Patent No.
1,7 04,204, relatively narrow groovesare made is applied with its forward marginal por- 'tions covering the rib on the heel breast and inserted into and secured within thegrooves at the inner sides ofithe rib, the=portions of" 1923. Serial No. 360,529.
the breast surface between the ribs being I marginal portions of the side'covering should be trimmed accurately in order to have the side covering fit properly in the grooves. It is quite difi'icult accurately to trim the' mar-- ginal port-ions of these coverings by hand and such process is slow and requires a high de? gree of. skill on the part of the operator. 7
An object of the present invention is to provide a reliable machine for expeditiously trimming the coverings of heels for reception in grooves in the breasts of the heels.
With the above object in view and in accordance with a feature of the invention, the illustrated machine is provided with instrumentalities illustrated as a disk cutter to trim a marginal portion of'a covering attached to a heel for preparing that portion for insertion in a groove in the breast of the heel and means thereto, which gage is constructed and arranged to engage within the groove to position the heel" relatively to the table. In order to position the marginal portion of the covering upon the table and to retain the 'tion of the covering and having a gage fixed same so positioned as the trimming operation progresses, thettable carries a holddown'device arrangedformovement toward and away from the table" to press the marglnal portion of the covering against the table and against the breast of the heel. In accordance with a i further feature of the invention, the illus trated machine is provided with a guideway constructed and arranged for determiningthe path of movement ofthe heel positioned upon the table past the rotary cutter -to trim the marginal portion'of the covering attached totheheel. r
. With the above and other objects in view the invention will now be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims.
Fig.1 is a side elevational view of the illustrated heel covering trimming machine showing a heel presented thereto for preparing a marginal portion of its side covering for insertion in a groove in the center of the breast of the heel;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view ottlie machine and the heel shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the machine fitted for tr mming the marginal portions of the side covering of heels for insertion in curved grooves in the breasts ot' the heels and adjacentto the breast corners of the l1eels,portions of the machine being broken away more clearly'to illustrate the heel positioning and trimming instrumentalitiesyand Fig. dis a perspective view of a portion of the machine, part of which has been broken away to show a section taken along the line IV -IV of Fig. 3 and illustrating a heel in the processof having the marginal portion of its side covering trimmed in the machine for preparing the same for insertion in a groove following a breastcorner of the heel.
The illustratedh'eel-cover trimming machine includes a disk or rotary cutter 10 for trimming a covering'l2 to prepare it for insertion in either one of two forms in grooves 14 (Figs. 1 and 2), 16 (Fig. 4) in the breast of a heel 18, gages 20 (Figs. 1 and 2) and 22 (Figs. 3and 4) constructed and arranged to engage within the grooves .14 and 16 respectively to position the heel 18relatively to the' disk cutter 10, a table 26. which carries either one of the gages 20, 22, for supporting themarginalportion 24 of the covering and a holddown device 28 to position the marginal portion 24 of the covering upon the table 26 for presenting the same to thecutter 10, the table 26 together with either of the gages 20 and 22 and the holddown device 28 being mountedfor movement pastthe cutter 10 for carrying out the trimming operation.
The above-referred to instrumentalities for facilitating the positioning of the heel 18 and the marginal portion 24. of the heel cov eringrelatively to the cutter 10 and for trimming the covering are supported upon. a. standard 30 including a bracket 32 secured thereto byscrews 34.- (Figs. land 4), which bracket carries a plate 36 :clamped to its forward end (Fig; 2) 'For conveniently raising or lowering the heel positioning instrumentalities the plate 36Iis mounted for adjustment in a vertical direction relatively tothe standard 30, the plate36 being heldin the desired verticalposition by a bolt38 which is screwed into the bracket 32 and-passes through a slot l0 in the plate36. In orderto' prevent lateral shifting between the bracket 32 and the plate 36 as the above-described vertical adjustment is effected, the bracket 32 is provided with a vertically extending recess 4-2 for receiving a tongue portion -14 ofthe plate 36. The upper forward portion of the plate 36 includes a horizontally disposed dove-tail tenon i6 which is constructed and arranged to mate with a dove-tail mortise portion 18 (Fig. 4:) in a depending flared portion of the table,
thus providing a guidcway for slidingl v supporting thetable as it moved past the retary cutter 10 to carry out the trimming operation; which will later be described.
The cutter 10 is mounted upon the end of a shaft 52 by a screw 54, the shaft being supported for rotation in any conventional manner in the upper portion of the standard 30. a
The table 26 upon which the marginal portion 24: of the heel covering is supported at opposite sides of the cutter 10 as the trimming operation progresses, comprises a hori- ZOlliiZLl'POltlOIl 56 and the depending flared portion 50 by which it is supported and guided as above described. In order to sure a snug sliding fit between the mortise portion 4180f the table 26 and tenon portion 46 of the plate 36 the table is provided with a gib58 (Fig. 4) which may be conveniently adjusted by the screws 60. The central portion of the tablehas a recess 62 extending therethrough for conveniently disposing of the surplus trimmings. The portion of the table upon which the marginal portion 24: of the covering is presented to the cutter 10 preferably consists of a composite pad 6% of a relatively soft material which is held in position and is easily replaceable upon the horizontal portion 56 of the table by'the screws 66. 'The composite material fi l may be integral with the table and for purposes of illustration will be considered as part of thetable. 3 i a i In order to position the heel 18 relatively to the'table 26 and the cutter 10, the machine is provided withthe gages 20, 22 secured to the table 26 by screws 68 (Fig. 1), 66 (Fig. 4"), respectively, thefitypeof used dependingupon whether it is desired to trim the marginal portion 24: of the covering for insertion intothe groove 14 which is positioned in the center of the breast of the heel andlies in asingle plane or for insertion into the curvedgrooves 16 in the breast of the heel andsubstantially parallel to the breast cornersof theheel. Itwill bcnoted that the gagei20is securedto the table near the lower surface .72 thereof and that the gage is clampedbetween the composite pad and the horiozntalportion' 56 of the table. Since the center groove 14e'lies in a single plane the gage 20'Wl11l1 engages within that groove maybe of considerablelength so thatit'erjtendsbeyond the attaching face and the top liftsattaching rface of the heel as shown in (Fig. 2- i he length. ofthe'flat heel ngag p r ion 76 (E gever the gage 2.2 however quite short .inorder to provideor its i vsi-tion eiliectively the heel 18 relatively to the table 26.
To position'the marginal portion 24 of the covering upon the table 26 and to retain (F gsthe same so positioned thereon as the table is moved past the cutter 10, the machine is provided with the holddown device 28 movable toward and away from the table 26 upon rod 7 8 which extends through a portion of the table 26 and is secured against movement relatively to the table in the direction of its axis. The holddown device 28which is thus arranged for movement with the table includes the elongated bar 79 L-sh,aped in cross-section attached to an arm 80 which is secured at 82 to the rod .78 for moving the bar 79 toward and away from the table 26 as above stated. Thebar 7 9 is constructed and arranged to press the marginal portion 24; of the covering .against the table 26 and against thefibreast of the heel (Figs. 1 and a) when theheel18 ha'sibeen positioned upon either of the gages 20, 22.
It will be notedthat in trimming the marginal portions- 2% ofthe coverings for the two types vof groovedheelsabove described that the bar 79 engages .the'coverings against different port-ions otthe breasts of the heels. In center groove work, such as shown in 1 and '2, the flange 8 1i of the bar -7 9 engages 1) to posit-ion the heel cfovering relativelyto the table 26, while in the curved groove work, suchas shown in Figs. 3 and l, the flange 88 and 4) of the bar 79 engages the covering upon" the breast of the heel near one of the breastcorners of the heel while positioning the marginal portion of the heel .eoveringrelatively to the table 26. In order conveniently to operate the holddown 28 and tomove the table- 26 pastthe cutter 10, the rod 7 8 is provided witha curved end portion .90 (Figs- 1 and 2) upon the end portion of which is mounted a handle 92. The sliding movementof the table 26 upon the'tenonportion 46 of the plate. 36 is limited by a screw 93 (Fig.1) and a pin 95 fixed to the plate To protect the operator during the heel trimming operation," the machine is provided with a guard 94 pivotally mounted upon an "arm96 which has a slot 98 (Fig. 2) arranged to receive a bolt 100 threaded into the top of the standard SO'for adjustably securing the guard 94: in the desired-position relatively to the cutter 10. The guard 94 is normally held -in'it's rear' position (Figs. 1 and 2) by a' spring .102 the end portionsof which are secured-to the studs 104,106of the arm and the guard, respectively. r 1
