[Class 17 (i)] Trimming.-A machine adapted for trimming a cover which is secured to a heel comprises an anvil for supporting part of the projecting margin of the cover and a driven rotary tool for bevelling the supported part of the margin; the tool is provided with a plurality of projections which bevel the margin by a series of cuts each progressing towards the edge of the margin, and which lie on a surface of revolution forming with a face of the anvil an opening, V-shaped in two directions at right-angles, into which the margin is fed. The tool 34 is provided with slightly undercut teeth 56 each having a sharp cutting edge 60 inclined to the plane of rotation of the tool so as to provide a draw-cut and feed the work ; the tool also has conical portions 72 which form with a curved-away portion 70 of the anvil 36 a V-shaped opening 74 to receive the margin 22 of the cover, and beating elements 76 which force the margin against the anvil during bevelling. Each fourth tooth of the tool is omitted. The face of the anvil against which the inner face of the cover rests is tangential to the tool to provide a V-shaped opening 66 to allow the tool to bevel the margin. The heel seat 30 or breast face rests against the back 40 of the anvil 36 while the covered face of the heel is engaged by a gauge 38. The anvil is adjustable by a tongue 86, groove 88 and screw 92 to vary the angle of bevel. The gauge 38 is rockable by a screw 102 and spring 106 about a pivot on a slidable member 94 adjustable by a screw 98 and a slot. The housing 90 carrying the gauge 38 and anvil 36 is adjustable on the standard 50 carrying the tool by a tongue and groove, clamp screws 114 and an adjusting screw 116 and spring 118. Dust and chips are removed by a suction pipe 122.
