Abstract

7633. Tooth, L. F. March 26. Reverberatory furnaces; hearths; crowns; air, supplying.-Comprises modifications in gas-fired furnaces for the cupellation of silver, glass-bending, enamelling, &c. The construction shown consists of a reverberatory chamber having an opening in its bottom, into which is inserted a vertically adjustable cupel, hearth, or plate C mounted on a carriage D. The burners H project through openings I at one side of the furnace and are inclined upwards to play on the roof J, which is convex near the burners and concave at the opposite side of the furnace. The products of combustion escape through openings K corresponding with the burner openings, and pass through transverse horizontal flues L in the furnace crown to a longitudinal flue N in communication with the chimney. The flues L have air-admission openings l at one end and cleaning-doors at the other. When used for the cupellation of metals, air, heated in pipes in the flue N, is admitted to the furnace through the nozzle p. A hood in communication with the main flue is arranged over the furnace door for carrying-off fumes.
