Annealing - furnaces or muffles.-A muffle or furnace for annealing or similarly treating tubes, sheets, rods, and other metal articles, and glass, pottery, &c., is built with a firebrick or like partition in the combustion chamber, which partition, becoming incandescent, assists in igniting the unburnt gases passing from the grate to or round the annealing- chamber. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the roof or partition F of the combustion chamber B is formed with protuberances C, which break up the stream of unburnt gases and mix them with the oxygen, and similar blocks are placed in the cavities b<1>, Fig. 2, near the roof of the annealing- chamber H, to conduct into it the heat of the gases rising into the cavities through the openings 2, 1. The flues 4, Fig. 1, may be closed by dampers, and the flues 5 opened to conduct the furnace gases round the chamber H and into the flue 6, the openings 7, 8 being closed to conduct the heated gases along the roof of the annealing- chamber. Thence they may be led, as shown in Fig. 6, into the flue B' of an adjacent annealing- furnace, and so on into a third. In the modification shown on the left-hand side of Fig. 6, a supplementary flue E is formed between the roof F of the combustion chamber and the floor of the annealing-chamber H.
