Abstract
9089. Incandescent Heat Co., and Smallwood, A. April 19. Annealing-furnaces; hearths.-In a furnace for armour-plates and the like adapted for either close or open annealing, the heating-flues are formed in the hearth, side walls, and roof of the annealing chamber, into which a portion of the products of combustion is passed during open annealing from the side and bottom flues. In the arrangement shown, in which the hearth is supported on a wagon, the products of combustion during close annealing pass from the furnaces E to combustion chambers e', and thence through flues e<3> to passages in the hearth formed by partitions h<1> and removable slabs h<2>. The hot gases pass away from the hearth by way of an end flue h<6>, vertical side passages, side flues K situated above the combustion chambers, and the roof flue L. For open annealing, some of the slabs h<2> are removed to allow a portion of the products of combustion to pass into the annealing chamber from the hearth flues, while the remainder passes in through damper-controlled openings k' in the flues K. Baffles are separately arranged to direct the gases on to the roof of the chamber. The hot gases pass out through a flue leading direct to the roof flue L. Air for secondary combustion issupplied to the combustion chambers e' through openings m, n', and the connexion between the combustion chamber and the hearth flues is made by short tubes e<3> inserted through suitably arranged doors.
