Kilns. - A single - chamber down-draught kiln for burning bricks and for like purposes is provided with a grate b<2>, Figs. 1 and 2, at each side of each end and with dampered flues F, E arranged in the walls on a level with the fire for supplying hot air above and below the grates. The gases leave the kiln by flues d<1> provided with dampers d<2> preferably placed outside the kiln, so that the furnace gases may be passed through any particular part of the contents of the kiln. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the flue F is arranged beneath the floor of the kiln chamber. A water trough H may be placed below each grate so that the steam generated may assist combustion.
