Safety-valves.-An exhaust valve a for steamengines, including steam-turbines, is constructed with a series of ports b in an annular flange above the valve seating, whereby the exhaust steam lifts the valve at a predetermined pressure and passes through into an annular passage c and thence to the feedwater-heater or the like. If the valve is lifted clear above the ports a, the surplus steam is allowed to pass to the atmosphere in the usual way. The ports b are of a sufficiently small area to restrict the passage of the steam somewhat, to prevent hammering.
