Abstract
6789. Flory, T. W. March 17. Tivoli billiards and the like.-The apparatus is of the type in which a ball projected up a playing- board is to be caught in a movable cup controlled by the player. Prior to the commencement of the game, the player may receive an electric shock of gradually increasing intensity from an induction coil. Normally, two balls are retained in a magazine 60 by a stop 60 on a rod 90, and a single ball is retained in a shoot 64 by a shutter 64. The inserted coin strikes a lever 53 and withdraws the shutter permitting the ball to pass to a spring- controlled striker k. The player projects the ball by depressing a handle q, the ball dropping through a gap y between the curved extremity w of a guide v and a separate piece x amongst deflecting-pins 10, whereupon the player endeavours to catch it in a movable cup a provided with pockets 11, 12, 13. The cup is carried by a pivoted arm d rotated by means of a knob f. If the ball is caught in the pocket 12, it passes by a shoot 62 into position to render the check-delivery mechanism operative, the player rotating a handle 50 to effect the delivery of the check and simultaneously withdrawing the stop 60 from the magazine 60, permitting the two balls contained therein to pass on to a platform 67, where they are retained by an escapement device 74. After freeing the check-delivery device, the winning ball passes by a shoot 87 to the striker k, permitting the game to be continued. If the ball is caught in either of the cups 11, 13, it passes by a shoot 59 to the magazine 60, and on its way, by rocking a lever 68, oscillates the escapement device 74 to permit a ball (if there are any on the platform) to pass to the striker. The game continues until there are two balls in the magazine 60 and the third ball is caught in either of the cups 11, 13 ; this ball is then deflected into a side shoot 63 and passes to the shutter 64. External handles 50, 15 are connected to the terminals of the secondary of an induction coil 33, the circuit of which is completed through the inserted coin. The coin is supported in the shoot 35 by a pin 38 on a lever 44 until the player rotates the handle 15, thereby rocking the lever 44 through a link 32 and permitting the coin to drop to a second pin (not shown), in which position it completes the circuit through a contact-spring 47. Continued rotation of the handle 15 effects, through a link 31, the gradual withdrawal of a brass tube covering the core of the coil, and through a link 23 and lever 24, the movement of a pointer 26 over a scale 27, the simultaneous movement of the lever 44 finally permitting the coin to escape and strike the lever 53. The winning ball passes into a shoot 62 and rests on ledges 83, Fig. 3, on a slide 80 connected through a link 78, Fig. 2, and crank 77 to the handle 50. When the handle is rotated, the slide is moved to the left, and the ball drops between the curved extensions 85 of the ridges in front of projections 88 on a delivery slide 86 ; as the rotation of the handle continues, both slides are moved to the right, the slide 86 removing the lowest check from the chamber 86.
