Abstract

5965. Spiess, G. March 9 Bookbinding-machines.-In machines for applying covers to books, pamphlets, &c., and of the kind in which sheet piles are carried by a conveyer to a rotatable carrier which tips them up and drops them on to the previously glued cover, the piles A are tipped by means of oscillating plates or arms C, and are carried downwards by pairs of rollers H, J, 0, P, Q, R which are consecutively operated to press the pile with the folded cover thereon by means of camoperated levers K, K<1>, K<2>. The cover is supported on an apertured table D, the gap being closed to support heavy piles by a roughened, ribbed, or corrugated plate W preferably guided by the table and operated by a cam. The books are finally pressed between jaws V, V<1> and the backs are pressed with a stroking action by a moving band Z.
