A machine for gluing loose leaves and applying covers thereto comprises a turntable 1, rotated continuously about a vertical axle 2 from an electric motor 101 and belt drive 102, having a plurality of cut-outs 3 for the insertion of the loose leaves 4, each cut-out 3 having a clamping plate 5, for clamping the leaves 4 against the side 31 of the cut-out, attached to a radially reciprocating rod 6 spring pressed against a common stationary cam disc 8 fixedly mounted on the axle 2, the backs of the leaves 4 being passed during one revolution of the turntable in succession to the following working stations : A, at which the loose sheets are placed edgewise on a vibrating table 9 ; B, at which the sheets are clamped by the plate 5 ; C, at which the leaves pass diametrically over a circular milling cutter 11, the leaves 4 being milled off as they pass the first side and roughened as they pass the second side of the cutter ; D, at which the leaves are released by the clamp onto a table 12 and then reclamped; E, at which glue is applied by rollers 13 to the cut edges ; F, at which a cover 15 is applied ; G, at which the cover is pressed onto the leaves 4 by a device 20 and H, at which the covered books are released from the clamps 5 drop out of the cut-outs 3 in the turntable 1 onto a delivery table 22. The effective length of each rod 6 is adjustable by a handwheel 7 to accommodate varying thicknesses of leaves 4. At A and B the table 9, vibrated from a motor 10, and the rotating cutter 11 are just under the lower edges of the clamps 5 so that the cutter 11 effects a clean cut on all leaves. The leaves are lowered at D so that glue should not reach the clamps 5. The gluing rollers 13 at E are rotatably mounted in a glue container 14 and have segment-shaped recesses 13a, the rollers being adjusted individually so that between them the whole length of the leaves is glued. The book covers 15 at F are arranged on a support 16 which rises automatically under the action of a step by step switching mechanism 17 and spring 18 each time a cover is removed. The pressing device 20 at G comprises clamping jaws to press the cover from below and from the sides. Both the support 16 and device 20 are connected to a box 19 to be moved therewith upwardly and for a time in contact with the leaves 4, on the elliptical path 21, tangentially to the table 1, the box 19 being moved one revolution, by appropriate driving and guiding mechanism, while one set of leaves 4 moves from F to G.
